some frequently asked questions...

about Ko Kwan Do

taking a mixture of Korean and Japanese translations it can be taken to mean `the school of the open way`, which is exactly what it is. We take an open approach and learn from many sources.

What does "Ko Kwan Do" mean?

in the traditional sense KKD is not a style, it is more a system where techniques from a variety of styles are adapted and used to teach (first and foremost) a student practical self defence skills - most techniques come from Choi Kwang Do, Jujitsu, boxing, grappling...it is mixed...if it works, use it

What `style` is it?

How long has "Ko Kwan Do" been around?

Chief Instructor Matthew Frere-Smith started teaching in schools around Norwich around 1995/6, started his own Choi Kwang Do school in 1998 and the KKD school started in 2001 when he wrote the syllabus and became independent from the CKD organisation

we do not train for competition although students are free to enter if they wish - we train for self defence; we do spar, throw and grapple so it is pretty hands on and obviously this breeds a level of natural healthy competitveness

Is it competitive?

What are the benefits?

builds confidence & self esteem, increased fitness, strength, flexibility, helps focus & self discipline, gain real self defence skills ...it is good fun!

What makes it good for self defence ?

mixed group training (on the street their are no weight/size categories!), all techniques trained full power (mitts, pads etc.) no pulling punches, no banned techniques, hands on training not just patterns and techniques, including role playing drills etc

absolutely - children have a seperate syllabus and not being competition based means they can progress at their own pace; because of our open realistic approach women can tailor the training to suit

Is it suitable for women and children?

Does "Ko Kwan Do" involve weapons?

not as part of the syllabus but we train defending against weapons from early on - we practice use of everday items as weapons though!! senior students are encouraged to learn some weapons use - mainly kubotan, short stick or staff, as these could be everday items (broom?, umbrella? pen?)....

What about...?
