Chief Instructor

Matthew Frere-Smith

Chief Instructor

C. Ed.

Black Belt 3rd Degree Ko Kwan Do

Black Belt 2nd Degree Choi Kwang Do

Matthew has over 17 years experience in martial arts and has been instructing for the last 10 years. Reaching 2nd degree and having instructed CKD, he supplemented his training with Ju Jitsu, as well as studying other martial arts and combat forms in general. In 2000 he achieved a Certificate in Education (Post Compulsory) using Martial Arts training as his subject.

He founded Ko Kwan Do in Norwich in 2001 in order to teach what he describes "as a system derived from and paying respect to tradition, but adapted for modern conflict situations". He believes the core techniques of an effective self defence system should be "basic and efficient, powerful and usable".

He says his proudest moment was hosting a seminar for Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi in his hometown of Norwich in 1999 - " getting to be actually hands on with a true Martial Arts legend is an unforgetable experience ". He gets his motivation from the enthusiasm of his students and the fact that the martial arts world is so diverse that “there is always something new to learn, so much history and so many cultures involved that I feel I am only now starting out…”

Chief Instructor Matthew Frere-Smith is available for personal and individual instruction, small group training, or one off seminars. All can be arranged to suit. Please contact to discuss your requirements
